Biography:
Rep. Jay Swearingen, a Democrat, represents Southwest Clay County (District 18) in the Missouri House of Representatives. He was elected to his first two-year term in November 2010.
In addition to his legislative duties, Rep. Swearingen has worked in economic development, as a commercial real estate broker, freelance writer and senior staff for several state and federal political campaigns. He served for in the United States Army Reserves from 1984 – 1996 where he was AIT honor graduate and received the Army Achievement Medal.
Rep. Swearingen has directed the programs of downtown economic development in four different communities in Texas and Oklahoma. He led the effort to rebuild the economy of the bomb-ravaged, 30-block area of downtown Oklahoma City following the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.
He is a past executive director, board member and Lifetime Achievement Award winner of the North Kansas City Business Council and past chairman of Habitat for Humanity’s Family Selection Committee. Rep. Swearingen is a 2008 graduate of Leadership Northland sponsored by the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Rep. Swearingen is a 1984 graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in San Antonio, Texas. He received his B.A. in Journalism from Texas State University and his Master of Public Administration degree from the University of North Texas.
Rep. Swearingen’s grandfather J.W. Kesner from Hayti, MO was a prolific Christian author, lecturer and Baptist pastor.
Born October 21, 1966 in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Rep. Swearingen currently resides in North Kansas City with his wife, Valerie. They have three children, Kylie, Tatum and Reid.
