COMMITTEE

HB 1376 -- NEW MEMBER VISITATION OF STATE INSTITUTIONS

SPONSOR: Farnen

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee
on Governmental Organization and Review by a vote of 11 to 0.

Currently, the visitation of state-supported institutions by new
members of the General Assembly (usually called the "Freshman
Tour") is required to take place during the first 2 weeks of
December of each year following a general election. This bill
removes the time requirement, thus allowing the visitation to
take place at any time.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that this bill cleans up old
language related to who is authorized to conduct the freshman
tour. The bill also deletes the time restriction for the tour.
Term limits will make it necessary to have a longer learning
period for new members.

Testifying for the bill was Representative Farnen.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
