House Journal - January 29, 1996
House Journal
Second Regular Session, 88th General Assembly
SIXTEENTH DAY, Monday, January 29, 1996
Speaker Gaw in the Chair.
Prayer by Father Hugh Behan.
"You have seen what I did..I carried you on eagle's wings." (Ex. 19:4).
The Sunday magazine featured the Bald Eagle along the Mississippi here in Missouri. It got me
to thinking about the consideration of the turkey as the national bird symbol, because George
Washington thought of the Eagle as a scavenger and a predator while the turkey was a noble
bird for him.
Our views have changed, we see the eagle as majestic and soaring and we use the word "turkey"
as an insult for certain kinds of conduct.
Today, gracious God, as we begin this week and are about to end this month, we pray for the
eagle that is in all of us, capable of destruction and capable of great nobility. Someone has
said that "it is hard to fly like an eagle when you are surrounded by turkeys " but we know
that so often we take no responsibility for our actions, and we blame our peers or the
atmosphere of our place of work. Lift us high, heavenly Father, as we take heart in that other
beautiful image from Isaiah, of being carried by you on eagle's wings. Amen.
The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited.
The Speaker appointed the following to act as Honorary Pages for the Day, to
serve without compensation: Reuben Hartzler, Bethany Hartzler and Emma
Hartzler.
The Journal of the fifteenth day was approved as printed by the following
