SB0553C-Committee Bill Summary (House)

SB 553, HCA 1 -- POSTSECONDARY COURSE OPTIONS

SPONSOR: Bentley (Stoll)

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on Education-Elementary and Secondary by a vote of 24 to 0.

The postsecondary course option currently allows eligible high school juniors and seniors to attend classes on a college or university campus and receive both high school and college credit for completion of the course. The bill removes the grade level restriction.

HCA 1 -- Allows school districts to vote to join a community college district that does not adjoin the school district as long as the school district is within 2 counties of the community college district.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that limiting dual enrollment courses to juniors and seniors prevents high school students in lower grades from participating; many bright tenth-graders would appreciate the chance to take advanced classes, particularly in math.

Testifying for the bill was Senator Bentley.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
