Summary of the Committee Version of the Bill

HCS HB 294 -- NONPAYMENT OF RENT

SPONSOR: Stevenson (Chappelle-Nadal)

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on
Judiciary by a vote of 14 to 0.

This substitute requires associate circuit courts to adopt a
local court rule providing for the centralized filing of rent and
possession cases and to hear the cases within 30 days after the
date of the filing.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2010, FY 2011, and
FY 2012.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill will shorten the period
of time that a landlord has to wait to evict someone for not
paying his or her rent. This is fair to landlords because they
have expenses to pay.

Testifying for the bill were Representatives Chappelle-Nadal and
McGhee.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
