HB 826 -- SEXUALLY VIOLENT PREDATORS SPONSOR: Brown (149) COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on Corrections and Public Institutions by a vote of 12 to 0. This bill authorizes the Department of Mental Health to enter into a contract agreement with one or more county jails in this state for the confinement of a person ordered to the department after a determination by a court that he or she may meet the definition of a sexually violent predator or for the confinement of a person ordered to the department after a finding of probable cause under Section 632.489, RSMo. These individuals must be housed and managed separately from offenders in the custody of the county jail. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2010, FY 2011, and FY 2012. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that there is a space problem at the Missouri Sexual Offender Treatment Center. The bill will allow the Department of Mental Health to contract with counties for the housing of some of these offenders. Testifying for the bill were Representative Brown (149); Department of Mental Health; and Missouri Sheriffs Association. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.Copyright (c) Missouri House of Representatives
