Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 1033 -- Mandatory School Attendance

Sponsor: Gatschenberger

This bill requires the public school in which a student is
enrolled to notify the custodial parent or guardian about any
unexcused absence and request a parental conference after two
unexcused absences in a month. The school must attempt to reduce
or eliminate the absences by changing the student's assignments
or offering remediation or assistance in enrolling in an
alternative program, among other options. The parent or guardian
of a child who doesn't enforce a child's mandatory school
attendance will be fined up to $25 for each day of the child's
unexcused absence.
