Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 1047 -- Disability History and Awareness in Public Schools

Sponsor: Grisamore

This bill requires every school district to annually provide
disability history and awareness instruction in all K-12 public
schools during the month of October which is to be designated as
"Disability History and Awareness Month." The bill describes the
elements of disability history and requires that instruction be
integrated into the existing curriculum. The goals of
instruction include better treatment for individuals with
disabilities; encouragement to individuals with disabilities to
develop increased self-esteem; and reaffirmation of the local,
state, and federal commitment to full inclusion. Higher
education institutions are also encouraged to conduct and promote
disability awareness activities.
