Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 889 -- Dog Fighting

Sponsor: Nieves

This bill specifies that any person performing the lawful seizure
of a dog used for dog fighting must be given a disposition
hearing within 30 days, place the impounded dog in the care or
custody of a veterinarian or appropriate animal control authority
or shelter, humanely kill any dog impounded if it is determined
by a licensed veterinarian to be diseased or disabled beyond
recovery, and not be liable for any necessary damage to property
if the dog has been lawfully seized.

The owner, custodian, or any person claiming interest in the dog
may prevent disposition of the dog by posting bond or security in
an amount sufficient to provide for the dog's care and keeping
for at least 30 days. The owner or custodian of any dog humanely
killed under the provisions of the bill will not be entitled to
recover any damages related to or the actual value of the dog.
