Summary of the Committee Version of the Bill

HB 1340 -- SALES TAX FOR DOUGLAS COUNTY FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICTS

SPONSOR: Dugger

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on
Local Government by a vote of 14 to 0.

This bill repeals the authorization for a sales tax of up to 1%
for operation costs with a reduction of the property tax levy
annually by 50% of the previous year's sales tax revenue for fire
protection districts in Douglas County.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2011, FY 2012, and
FY 2013.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that this sales tax does not provide
any benefit for Douglas County. There are no fire protection
districts in the county, only small, mostly volunteer, fire
departments. There is only one city in the county and not enough
retail establishments to generate a great amount of sales tax
revenue.

Testifying for the bill was Representative Dugger.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
