HB 1745 -- ABANDONED MILITARY MEDALS SPONSOR: Day COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on Veterans by a vote of 10 to 0. This bill requires the State Treasurer upon receiving a military medal, to hold and maintain it until the original owner or his or her heirs can be found. The State Treasurer may designate a veteran's organization or other appropriate organization as custodian of a medal until the owner or his or her heirs are located. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2011, FY 2012, and FY 2013. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill allows the State Treasurer to take military medals which have not been claimed and are scheduled to be auctioned and entrust them to a veteran service organization to hold and maintain until they are claimed; and if they are not claimed, the medals can be assigned to a place of honor. Testifying for the bill were Representative Day; Office of the State Treasurer; Dewey Rhein, Missouri Association of Veterans Organizations and Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Missouri Department; and Lynn Dorrell, American Legion, Department of Missouri. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.Copyright (c) Missouri House of Representatives
