HB 2250 -- PUBLIC SAFETY SALES TAX SPONSOR: Curls COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Ways and Means by a vote of 11 to 1. This bill authorizes the City of Kansas City to impose, upon voter approval, a sales tax of one-eighth, one-fourth, three-eighths, or one-half of 1% for public safety activities, including operations and capital improvements, and for the retirement of bonded indebtedness. The bill contains an emergency clause. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2011, FY 2012, and FY 2013. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill is needed because the current tax will expire in 2011 and that language has been added to allow the city to hire more police officers. Testifying for the bill were Representative Curls; and Board of Police Commissioners of the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.Copyright (c) Missouri House of Representatives
