HB 2255 -- MENINGOCOCCAL VACCINATIONS SPONSOR: Jones (89) COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Healthcare Transformation by a vote of 8 to 1. This bill requires the Department of Health and Senior Services to develop information by January 1, 2011, for each school district to provide at the beginning of each school year to the parent or guardian and each student in sixth through twelfth grade about meningococcal disease and the availability of a vaccine to prevent the disease. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2011, FY 2012, and FY 2013. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill does not require the vaccination but provides only educational information regarding the vaccine which is recommended for middle school age children. Parents will decide whether or not to have their child vaccinated. Testifying for the bill were Representative Jones (89); Paula Jimenez; Sanofi Pasteur; and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation.
