Summary of the Committee Version of the Bill

HB 2294 -- POLITICAL PARTY EMBLEMS ON BALLOTS

SPONSOR: Dugger

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Elections
by a vote of 7 to 1.

This bill repeals the provision that requires a political party's
emblem to be printed on an election ballot above the party
caption.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2011, FY 2012, and
FY 2013.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill will save space on
ballots and decrease printing costs. It may also prevent voter
confusion and wasted ballots because the state has eliminated
straight ticket voting but failed to remove the party emblems on
ballots.

Testifying for the bill were Representative Dugger; and several
members of the St. Louis City Election Authority.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
