Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 1854 -- School Safety and School Violence Prevention

Sponsor: Aull

Beginning with Fiscal Year 2012 and subject to appropriations,
this bill requires the General Assembly to annually appropriate
$500,000 to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
for deposit into the newly created School Safety and School
Violence Prevention Fund. The department must select an existing
agency or establish a new one to be the statewide center for
school safety and school violence prevention, which will receive
moneys from the fund. The center will provide services to all
public schools including, but not limited to, violence prevention
and intervention programs and models; guidance on building safety
and emergency plans; assistance in staff development on school
safety; publication of newsletters and maintenance of a web site;
annual training for school safety coordinators; acting as an
information clearinghouse; and collaboration with national,
state, and local agencies on school safety issues. The center
must annually submit a budget to the department and a summary of
its services and programs. The department must make the
information available to the General Assembly.
