HB 2035 -- Surgical Technologists Sponsor: Weter This bill prohibits any person from practicing as a surgical technologist in a licensed health care facility unless he or she has successfully completed an accredited educational program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains the Surgical Technologist Certification administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, or its successor organization; has completed an appropriate training program from any branch of the United States Armed Forces or the United States Public Health Service; provides evidence that he or she was employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility prior to August 28, 2010; or is performing surgical technologist duties in the service of the federal government. The bill also: (1) Allows a person to be employed to practice as a surgical technologist during the 12-month period immediately following his or her graduation from an accredited school; (2) Requires a surgical technologist to annually complete 15 hours of continuing education; (3) Requires a licensed health care facility which employs a surgical technologist to verify that he or she has met the continuing education requirements and, where applicable, that the person has maintained the Surgical Technologist Certification and to supervise each technologist that he or she competently performs delegated tasks intraoperatively and according to the provisions of the bill or other applicable laws; and (4) Specifies that the Department of Health and Senior Services will provide oversight for compliance with the provisions of the bill. Nothing in the provisions of the bill will prohibit any licensed practitioner from performing surgical technology tasks or functions if the person is acting within the scope of his or her license.Copyright (c) Missouri House of Representatives
