Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 2194 -- Cosmetology Schools

Sponsor:  Wells

This bill changes the laws regarding the curriculum and licensure
of schools of cosmetology. In its main provisions, the bill:

(1) Repeals the option that allowed schools of cosmetology to
base their required hours of credit for cosmetologists,
manicurists, or estheticians as determined by the formula in the
Code of Federal Regulations;

(2) Prohibits an applicant from being approved by the State
Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners unless the current
active instructor-to-school ratio for an accredited school of
cosmetology or school of manicuring and cosmetology is nine to
one or greater; and

(3) Allows a school holding a valid license as of August 28,
2010, to retain its existing status and a school holding a
current license being moved within 25 miles of its existing
location or sold to be relicensed at its current status if it
meets other licensing requirements.
