Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 2249 -- Wheelchair Accessibility of Capitol Offices

Sponsor: Carter

This bill requires the Chief Clerk of the House of
Representatives and the Secretary of the Senate to have in place
by October 1, 2010, an office accessibility protocol for members
of the General Assembly who do not have wheelchair-accessible
offices in the State Capitol Building. The protocol must be used
when a constituent with a mobility impairment requests a private
meeting with a member and must designate certain areas of the
Capitol that can be used for private meetings whether or not an
advance request has been made.

Beginning October 1, 2010, the bill requires each member of the
General Assembly to disclose to his or her constituents, through
the Internet web site and electronic or paper publications,
whether or not the member's Capitol office is wheelchair
accessible. The notification must include instructions on how a
person with a mobility impairment can request a private meeting
with the member using the office accessibility protocol.
