HB 897 -- Financial Responsibility
Sponsor: Alter
This bill requires that all state, county or municipal citations
issued for violation of traffic laws contain information as to
whether the person issued such citation has proof of financial
responsibility as required by law. Any person issued a citation
who fails to exhibit proof of financial responsibility will be
charged with a misdemeanor and fined $100. Such person must
appear in court and prove that financial responsibility was in
existence on the date the citation was issued. If proof is
given to the court, no charge will be issued, but if found
guilty, the person's driver's license will be seized by the
court, driving privileges will be suspended for 30 days, and the
Director of Revenue notified. The suspension will remain in
effect until the court-ordered suspension period of 30 days has
elapsed, the person can exhibit proof of financial
responsibility, and the person pays a reinstatement fee of $100.
