House Journal - Day 008

House Journal

Second Regular Session, 89th General Assembly

EIGHTH DAY, Tuesday, January 20, 1998

Speaker Gaw in the Chair.

Prayer by Father Hugh Behan.

"My honesty will answer for me." (Gen. 30:33)

Two stories from today's news give pause. One is about the relative of a former member of this House from St. Louis whose body was buried as an Unknown Airman from the Vietnam War but whose identity was concealed for political purposes. The other is the speculation about the political implications of Pope John Paul II's visit to Cuba tomorrow.

Gracious God, today, we pray for the elimination of the crass manipulation of the public, by cynical public officials, wherever and whoever, particularly avoiding the kind of pain caused to the family's feelings. We also pray for a greater understanding of the role of faith in public life. Religious values have social implications and they do impact public policy, whether in Missouri or Cuba. We pray for a healthy religious community which does not cross its bounds and for a political leadership which does not try to co-opt or ignore a people's deeply held values. Amen.

The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited.

The Speaker appointed the following to act as Honorary Pages for the Day, to serve without compensation: Brant Mettler and Shannon Little.
