Where is Susan Elizabeth Blow in the Hall of Famous Missourians?
Susan Elizabeth Blow established the first public kindergarten in the United States. Recognizing the benefits of preschool education as a result of her study of the kindergarten in Germany, Blow opened the Des Peres School in St. Louis in 1873. By 1883, every St. Louis public school had a kindergarten, making the city a model for the nation. Accepting no pay, she directed the St. Louis kindergarten system for 11 years. She also trained teachers who established kindergartens throughout the country. Because of her dedication, kindergarten became a vital part of the American education system. |
