Where is Norman E. Stewart in the Hall of Famous Missourians?

Norman Eugene “Norm” Stewart, carries a name that has become synonymous with Missouri basketball. A beloved longtime coach for the University of Missouri, “Stormin’ Norman” led the Tigers for more than three decades, fostering a legacy of passion for the game, commitment to excellence, and boundless devotion to the community.

Hailing from Shelby County, Missouri, Stewart distinguished himself as a star athlete at the University of Missouri from 1952-1956 . After graduating from Mizzou, he briefly played both professional baseball and basketball before returning in 1957 as a graduate student while serving as an assistant basketball coach.

In 1961, he assumed the head coaching position at the University of Northern Iowa, where he enjoyed six fruitful seasons and captured two conference championships among his 97 wins before returning to the University of Missouri as head basketball coach. Leading the Missouri Tigers for 32 remarkable seasons, he compiled an impressive 734 wins alongside eight Big Eight regular season titles, six conference tournament championships, and 16 NCAA Tournament appearances. He was named Coach of the Year by the UPI in 1982 and the Associated Press in 1994. In 2007, he was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

After being diagnosed with colon cancer in 1989, Stewart's resilience and resolve propelled him towards recovery. He refocused his efforts towards assisting others in their own battles against the disease, establishing Coaches Vs. Cancer, a program that has raised millions of dollars in support for the fight against cancer. To this day, his influence resonates far beyond the hardwood; Norm Stewart stands as a true icon of Mizzou, with a legacy that continues to inspire generations of Tigers to come.
