Representative Brandon Ellington, a Democrat, represents part of Jackson County and Independence (District 22) in the Missouri House of Representatives. He was first elected to the House in a special election in November 2011.
Rep. Ellington is a 1999 graduate of Paseo High School in Kansas City. He also attended Penn Valley University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Rep. Ellington is actively involved in the community by working with food pantries, starting neighborhood cleanup programs, mentorship programs, elderly assist programs, community outreach programs, and coaching youth in basketball. He is the cofounder of Voices of the People, We The People and serves as president of I Am My Brother’s Keeper. Also he is a member of G.Y.R.L.
Ellington is dedicated to being an advocate for the underprivileged and disenfranchised.
Rep. Ellington, who lives in Kansas City, was born on November 18, 1980.
Designates May 19 as “Malcolm X Observation Day” in Missouri
Designates May 19 of each year as "El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz Observation Day" in Missouri
Establishes the Malcolm X Day Commission to organize activities and events in honor of the civil rights leader
Requires all food and food products sold in Missouri that are or contain genetically modified products to be labeled as such
Modifies provisions relating to good time credit for prisoners and provisions authorizing expungement of certain criminal records
Modifies when a person may be eligible for parole if such person was under 21 years of age when the offense was committed and was sentenced after January 1, 1976
Establishes the Missouri Innocence Commission
Allows a victim or witness of a crime to be granted an automatic full order of protection if such victim or witness is fearful of his or her safety
Establishes law enforcement procedures relating to racial profiling, searches and seizures, and traffic stops
Requires the Department of Revenue to include in the Missouri Driver Guide educational material on vehicular stops and searches by law enforcement
Changes certain laws regarding complaints filed with the Missouri Commission on Human Rights regarding discrimination based upon a person's sexual orientation or gender identity
Increases the time after a child's birth that the father has to file an action to establish paternity prior to an adoption or to file a notice with the Putative Father Registry
Increases the state minimum wage to $15 per hour
Allows certain small businesses to be eligible to claim any state tax incentive that certain corporations may claim
Establishes the Economic Development Grant Program whose funds are used to reopen closed manufacturing facilities
Requires election authorities to make available at least one electronic voting machine per polling location for blind or visually impaired voters at an election in order to comply with federal law.
Specifies that students shall take a world history course in order to graduate from high school
Allows school districts to create magnet schools and changes provisions regarding the powers of superintendents
Establishes the Death with Dignity Act to allow patients with terminal illnesses to end their life in a humane and dignified manner
Establishes the Missouri DREAM Trust Fund and the Missouri Dream Trust Fund Commission
Repeals provisions that prohibit students who are unlawfully present in the United States from receiving postsecondary education public benefits
Modifies provisions relating to workers' compensation for firefighters
Requires the Department of Corrections to perform specified actions to improve the ability of working inmates to obtain employment upon release from incarceration
Changes the statute of limitations for certain actions regarding child abuse and sexual offenses committed against a child
Establishes the Customer Utility Protection Act
Establishes provisions regarding the limited legalization of marijuana
Prohibits employers from discriminating in providing compensation based on gender for the same work
Requires children under two years of age to be secured in rear-facing child passenger restraint systems
Establishes the "Make America Great Again Act" and repeals provisions that prohibit persons who are unlawfully present in the United States from receiving certain benefits
Requires same-day service for driver's license issuance and renewal
Gives owners of non-commercial motor vehicles the option of permanent registration
Proposes a constitutional amendment to require public approval in the relevant county before authorizing tax increment financing
