COMMITTEE
HB 1340 -- TRANSIENT GUEST TAX
SPONSOR: Klindt
COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee
on Tourism, Recreation and Cultural Affairs by a vote of 17 to 0.
This bill allows the city of Bethany upon voter approval to
impose a tax of at least 2% but not more than 5% on the charges
for all sleeping rooms of hotels, motels, bed and breakfast
inns, campgrounds, and any docking facility which rents slips to
recreation boats used by transient guests for sleeping.
FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.
PROPONENTS: Supporters say that for several years the city of
Bethany has wanted to fund a fully-staffed tourism center.
Bethany has become a major stopping point for travelers on route
to and from Iowa along the I-35 corridor and tremendous growth
has occurred. This legislation will accomplish their goal and
help fund a tourism center.
Testifying for the bill were Representative Klindt; and Chris
Ward, Assistant City Administrator for the City of Bethany.
OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
