HB 1529 -- Student Suicide Prevention

Beginning July 1, 2001, this bill establishes a 4-year
competitive grant program to create or expand student suicide
prevention programs.  Grant applicants may include political
subdivisions as well as schools and school districts, and
corporations, both profit and nonprofit, and partnerships.
Before July 1, 2001, the Department of Elementary and Secondary
Education must promulgate rules for the grant program.

Grantees must make a mid-term report on their progress, and
grants are renewable for an additional 4 years, based in part on
the results of the first grant.  Grants are to be distributed
evenly on a geographical basis according to student population,
but funds may be reallocated if an area does not have sufficient
applications.
