SCS SB 806 -- Requirements for Sheriffs
Sponsor: Jacob
This substitute makes changes to the requirements for elected sheriffs. Beginning January 1, 2001, newly elected sheriffs must have at least 470 hours of basic recruit training within 18 months of taking office. Elected sheriffs who have not completed the required training are not permitted to participate in primary enforcement activities. Failure to complete the training within 18 months vacates the office. Currently, elected sheriffs are required to participate in a specially designed 120-hour training program, which may be paid for by the state. These provisions do not apply to the sheriff of St. Louis City.
