HB 166 -- MINORITY TEACHING SCHOLARSHIPS SPONSOR: Troupe COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Education-Higher by a vote of 13 to 0. This bill increases the number of minority teaching scholarships from 100 to 200 and increases the amount of the scholarship from $2,000 to $3,000 if the student majors in special education. FISCAL NOTE: Estimated Net Cost to General Revenue Fund of $203,000 in FY 2002, FY 2003, and FY 2004. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the need for minority teachers is great. In the St. Louis City school district alone, more than 100 vacancies for special education teachers exist. Testifying for the bill were Representative Farnen; St. Louis Board of Education; and Associated Students of the University of Missouri. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
