Summary of the Committee Version of the Bill

HB 477 -- TEMPORARY DRIVER'S PERMITS

SPONSOR: Graham

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee
on Transportation by a vote of 9 to 0.

Current law requires parents to provide a minimum of 20 hours of
driver training in order for their child to obtain a temporary
instruction permit or an intermediate driver's license.

This bill gives an option of 20 hours of parent driver training
or the completion of a formal driver training program which
certifies the driver is competent to receive a driver's license.

The bill also makes it clear that any person at least 15 years
of age may operate a motor vehicle while in the immediate
presence of a driver training instructor.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that driver training from a
recognized driver training program should also be allowed to
count toward required driver training hours.

Testifying for the bill was Representative Graham.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
