HB 805 -- TEMPORARY INSTRUCTION PERMIT CO-SPONSORS: Mayer, Richardson COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on Motor Vehicle and Traffic Regulations by a vote of 8 to 0. Current law requires parents to provide a minimum of 20 hours of driver training in order for their child to obtain a temporary instruction permit and intermediate driver's license. This bill also gives instructors of persons enrolled in a federal residential job training program the authority to sign the application for a temporary instruction permit stating the applicant will receive 20 hours behind-the-wheel driving instruction. The bill clarifies that any person who has a temporary instruction permit and is a participant in a federal residential job training program may operate a motor vehicle accompanied by a driver training instructor. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that driver education instructors should also be allowed to certify the 20-hour driver training requirement. Testifying for the bill were Representatives Mayer and Richardson. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
