Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 435 -- American Sign Language

Co-Sponsors: Merideth, Graham, Levin

This bill recognizes American Sign Language or any other
generally accepted means of communication by the deaf community
as languages of many deaf Missourians and encourages their
teaching and study. Students may receive academic credit for
demonstrating proficiency in these languages, take courses for
academic credit in them, receive foreign language credit for the
courses, and meet foreign language entrance requirements with
them. The bill requires that only qualified persons be employed
to teach these languages in Missouri schools and that the
Missouri Commission for the Deaf, upon request, assist in the
development of courses in these languages.
