FIRST REGULAR SESSION
House Concurrent Resolution No. 27
91ST GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Whereas, a prayer day was first proclaimed by the Continental Congress in 1775; and
Whereas, the National Association for Prayer has proclaimed and declared the week of the National Prayer Day (the first Thursday in May) as a Prayer Week; and
Whereas, it is fitting that the state of Missouri observe a day when we acknowledge our many blessings and express gratitude to God while recognizing the need to strengthen the religious and moral values in our land; and
Whereas, the National Association for Prayer promotes a Statewide Prayer Day in Missouri to bring peace, unity and healing to our people; and
Whereas, a number of states across America will recognize the power of prayer by participating in bringing people together to pray for our schools, cities, states and nation. Many committees, organizations and civic groups will also participate in this event, knowing that prayer changes people and things and creates hope; and
Whereas, the Missouri General Assembly encourages students to begin their school day with the Pledge of Allegiance, anchored with a moment of silence for good thoughts, which will begin the school day on a positive note and will introduce a worthy patriotic program forgotten by many. The Missouri General Assembly invites universities, colleges and other institutions of higher education to be a good example to follow. All of these steps should help instill some traditional values and morals, which are much needed in this climate of recent violence:
Now, therefore, be it resolved that the members of the House of Representatives of the Ninety-first General Assembly, First Regular Session, the Senate concurring therein, hereby declare the first day of May, 2001, to be a Statewide Prayer Day in Missouri and urge all citizens of this state to join together in their homes, schools and places of business to pray for blessings on our schools, cities, states and nation.
Be it further resolved that the Chief Clerk of the Missouri House of Representatives be instructed to prepare a
properly inscribed copy of this resolution for Governor Bob Holden.Return to the Missouri
