HB 1381 -- INSURANCE
SPONSOR: Luetkenhaus
COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on
Insurance by a vote of 15 to 0.
This bill allows insurance companies to provide their policies in
a language other than English, as long as an English version is
also included. The English version will control in the event of
a dispute regarding the translation.
FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.
PROPONENTS: Supporters say that without this protection in the
law, many insurers won't even try to market insurance products to
people who don't speak English. States with a large
Spanish-speaking population, such as California, Florida, and
Texas, already have such a law.
Testifying for the bill were Representative Luetkenhaus; Missouri
Insurance Coalition; and State Farm Insurance Company.
OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
