HCS HB 1398 -- WORLD WAR II MEDALS SPONSOR: Boucher (Ward) COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Public Safety, Law Enforcement and Veterans Affairs by a vote of 20 to 0. This substitute allows veterans who were residents of the state at the time of their death to participate in the World War II medallion program. The substitute also changes the ending date for active service from September 30, 1945, to December 31, 1946, and changes the deadline for filing applications for World War II medals from January 1, 2002, to July 1, 2003. The substitute allows spouses of eligible, deceased veterans to apply for a medal. The substitute contains an emergency clause. FISCAL NOTE: Estimated Net Cost to the General Revenue Fund of $782,600 in FY 2003, $306,632 in FY 2004, and $0 in FY 2005. Estimated Net Effect to the World War II Veterans' Recognition Award Fund of $0 in FY 2003, FY 2004, and FY 2005. Totals are subject to appropriation. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the deadline should be extended to give eligible veterans additional time to be recognized under this program and that allowing spouses of deceased veterans to apply will help give recognition to Missouri veterans.
