HB 1406 -- NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF REGENTS SPONSOR: Barnett COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on Education-Higher by a vote of 14 to 0. This bill expands the Board of Regents for Northwest Missouri State University from seven to nine members. Under current law, six members must live in the state college district in which the university is located, and one member must be a resident of Nodaway County. Two additional members from any of the seven state college districts will be added, but no more than one can live in the same congressional district. FISCAL NOTE: Estimated Net Effect on General Revenue Fund of $0 in FY 2003, FY 2004, and FY 2005. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that Northwest Missouri State University draws students from throughout the state, and its governing board should be similar to other state institutions by including members from other parts of the state. The Board of Regents and the Coordinating Board have unanimously approved the proposal to expand the board. Testifying for the bill were Representative Barnett; Rollie Stadlman, Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents; and John Koffman, NMSU alumnus. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee. Becky DeNeve, Senior Legislative AnalystCopyright (c) Missouri House of Representatives
