HB 1581 -- STATE HIGHWAY PATROL SPONSOR: Clayton COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Public Safety, Law Enforcement and Veterans Affairs by a vote of 19 to 0. This bill allows the Superintendent of the Highway Patrol to authorize officers to accept federal commissions to provide investigative and arrest authority and to enforce federal laws. The bill also allows Highway Patrol officers to run for and hold positions as school board members. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that a need exists for more people to serve on school boards, especially in rural areas, and highway patrol officers have expressed an interest in serving on school boards and should be allowed that opportunity to help children. The bill will encourage officers to become more active in their communities. Testifying for the bill were Representative Clayton; Missouri State Trooper's Association; and Missouri State Highway Patrol. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
