Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 1130 -- Student Volunteer Opportunities

Co-Sponsors: Hosmer, Williams

This bill directs the State Board of Education to promote service
learning programs, which provide students with district-approved
opportunities to participate in community service related to the
students' academic studies. The programs may be included as part
of any credit-bearing course countable for high school
graduation. The board must provide technical assistance for any
district wishing to implement a service learning program and must
establish a program for teacher training in development of
service learning projects. The bill requires certain funding
sources for training to be used before the grant applicant
becomes eligible to apply. The board may use funds dedicated to
critical needs to implement the program.
