Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 1217 -- Prostate Cancer Awareness

Co-Sponsors: Johnson (61), Ross

This bill requires the Bureau of Cancer Control in the Division
of Chronic Disease and Prevention in the Department of Health and
Senior Services to develop and provide culturally relevant
educational literature on prostate cancer to local health
departments in order to increase awareness and the need for early
detection, prevention, and monitoring of prostate cancer among
adult men in high-risk populations. The literature must include
information on prostate cancer screening coverage and encourage
adult men to complete screenings in accordance with the most
recent American Cancer Society guidelines.

Local health departments are required to work with community
partners in order to identify effective mediums which engage
African-American men and adult men in high-risk populations.
Local health departments are also required to ensure that the
materials are reaching all men in high-risk populations and to
conduct prostate cancer education and outreach projects targeting
African-American men and adult men in high-risk populations.

The bill also requires that educational materials be distributed
to adult men through clinics, hospitals, ambulatory surgical
centers, and city and county health units.
