HB 1625 -- Character Education Grant Program

Co-Sponsors: Carnahan, Franklin, Copenhaver, Monaco, Harding,
Whorton, Shoemyer (9)

This bill creates a competitive grant program for character
education. Beginning with the 2003-2004 school year, the
Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will award 10
school districts grants of $100,000 each for character education.
Criteria for grant approval include any criteria developed for
federal character education grants or programs and programs
designed to teach responsibility, respect, and acceptance of
people of other races and ethnic backgrounds to at-risk students.
The Character Education Grant Program Fund is established. The
grants are subject to appropriation, and, should a smaller amount
than full funding be appropriated, grant sizes will be prorated.
