HB 1694 -- Screening for Metabolic and Genetic Diseases Co-Sponsors: Selby, Shoemyer (9), Kreider The bill expands the required testing for metabolic and genetic diseases by including various disorders, including hypothyroidism, maple syrup urine disease, and galactosemia. Currently, similar disorders listed in Section 191.332, RSMo, pertaining to supplemental newborn screening requirements, are required, subject to appropriations. Certain health care providers and administrators of hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers are required to report diagnosed cases of certain metabolic and genetic diseases to the Department of Health and Senior Services. The department is also required to develop and institute educational programs for certain metabolic and genetic diseases. Subject to appropriations, the department is required to provide food supplements and treatment services to persons suffering from metabolic disorders. Currently, formula is provided to eligible persons suffering from inherited diseases caused by amino acid disorders and organic acid disorders. The department may assess a sliding-scale fee to defray the costs of any food supplements or treatment services provided. No fees will be assessed for formula and up to $2,000 of pharmaceutically manufactured food supplements will be available to an individual without fees each year. Health carriers that offer health benefits plans continued on or after September 1, 2002, are required to provide coverage for formula, pharmaceutically manufactured food supplements, and treatment services for various diseases.Copyright (c) Missouri House of Representatives
