Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 2181 -- Air Ambulance Service

This bill makes several changes to the law regarding air
ambulance service.  The bill:

(1)  Requires the Director of the Department of Health and Senior
Services to appoint at least one member from each regional
Emergency Medical Services Committee who is associated with an
air ambulance service that is accredited by a nationally
recognized air ambulance accrediting organization;

(2)  Requires licensed air ambulances, after June 1, 2003, to be
accredited by a nationally recognized aeromedical transport
accreditation organization;

(3)  Requires a licensed air ambulance provider to carry a
minimum of $50 million in general liability insurance, including
specific coverage for damage to buildings caused by the impact of
an aircraft;

(4)  Prohibits the use of single engine rotary aircraft for air
ambulance service after August 31, 2002, except for aircraft
currently in use;

(5)  Requires air ambulance personnel to comply with all
requirements of advanced life support level of care;

(6)  Requires all aircraft used to provide air ambulance services
to provide full 360 degree access to patients, except for
aircraft currently in use; and

(7)  Exempts all aircraft currently in use from the provisions of
the bill, except when an aircraft is removed from service, the
replacement must meet the requirements of the bill.
