Summary of the Perfected Version of the Bill

HB 1058 -- HATE CRIMES (Haywood)

Currently, arson is a class A felony only when it is in the first
degree and a person has suffered serious physical injury or has
died as a result of the fire or explosion.  This bill adds first
and second degree arson to the crimes included in the hate crimes
statute when the structure damaged is a place of worship.  The
penalty for arson involving a place of worship is a class B
felony, unless a person has suffered serious physical injury or
has died as a result of arson involving a place of worship, in
which case it is a class A felony.

FISCAL NOTE:  Estimated Net Cost to General Revenue Fund of $0 in
FY 2003, $0 in FY 2004, and Less Than $100,000 in FY 2005.
