SECOND REGULAR SESSION
House Concurrent Resolution No. 29
91ST GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Whereas, the State of Missouri and the Nation are greatly indebted to coal miners for the difficult and dangerous work performed to provide the fuel needed to operate Missouri's and the Nation's industries and to provide energy to homes and businesses; and
Whereas, millions of workers have toiled in the Nation's coal mines over the last century, risking both life, limb, and health to fuel our economic expansion; and
Whereas, during the last century over 100,000 coal miners have been killed in mining accidents, 100,000 coal miners have contracted black lung disease, and 3,500,000 coal miners have suffered nonfatal injuries in our Nation's coal mines; and
Whereas, coal provides 50 percent of the Nation's electricity and 82.1 percent of Missouri's energy; and
Whereas, the United States has approximately 275 billion tons of recoverable reserves which represents about 95 percent of all fossil fuel reserves in the United States, about one-fourth of the world's known coal reserves, and 275 years of recoverable coal reserves; and
Whereas, issuing a postage stamp to honor Missouri's and the Nation's coal miners is fitting and proper:
Now, therefore, be it resolved that the members of the House of Representatives of the Ninety-first General Assembly, Second Regular Session, the Senate concurring therein, hereby urge the United States Congress to enact H.C.R. 245 and S.C.R. 77 which encourage the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee to recommend to the Postmaster General that a stamp honoring the Nation's coal miners be issued; and
Be it further resolved that the Chief Clerk of the Missouri House of Representatives be instructed to prepare
properly inscribed copies of this resolution for each member of the Missouri Congressional Delegation.Return to the Missouri
