HB 1657 -- Emergency Contraception

Sponsor: Jones

This bill establishes the Woman's Right to Know Act.

The Division of Maternal, Child, and Family Health in the
Department of Health and Senior Services is required to raise
public awareness by informing hospitals, health providers,
pharmacists, and the community about the existence and
availability of emergency contraception. The division is
required to promote appropriate counseling and referrals for
emergency birth control approved by the United States Food and
Drug Administration.

The division is also required to develop and distribute
information that stresses the availability of emergency birth
control and its use, safety, and effectiveness if taken as soon
as possible after intercourse. The information provided is
required to emphasize that emergency contraception is a method of
pregnancy prevention that cannot harm or terminate an established
pregnancy.
