HB 456 -- GRAND JURY DUTIES

SPONSOR:  Kuessner

COMMITTEE ACTION:  Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on
Judiciary by a vote of 12 to 0.

This bill eliminates the duty of a grand jury to examine public
buildings and report on their condition.

FISCAL NOTE:  No impact on state funds in FY 2006, FY 2007, and
FY 2008.

PROPONENTS:  Supporters say that the existing law was enacted in
1947 before there were mechanisms to inspect courthouse
buildings.  Today, there are procedures in place to inspect
courthouses, and the requirement is obsolete.

Testifying for the bill was Representative Kuessner.

OPPONENTS:  There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
