Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 1241 -- Corrections Officer and Jailer Training

Sponsor: Roorda

This bill creates within the state treasury the Corrections
Officer Training Fund for the training of corrections officers
and jailers. A $5 surcharge will be assessed for each court
proceeding filed in any circuit court in this state or any
municipal court which employs a jailer and will be deposited into
the fund. Moneys in this fund will not at any time be
transferred to general revenue.

Beginning January 1, 2007, all corrections officers and jailers
are required to receive a minimum of 36 hours of training every
three years. At least half of those hours must be police academy
training which meets Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)
requirements. Specific training standards will be determined by
the Corrections Officer Certification Commission.
