AN ACT
To amend chapter 173, RSMo, by adding thereto one new section relating to course requirements at state institutions of higher education.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, as follows:
Section A. Chapter 173, RSMo, is amended by adding thereto one new section, to be known as section 173.910, to read as follows:
173.910. 1. In order to promote an understanding of American culture, students entering public institutions of higher education in this state in the fall semester of 2007 and thereafter shall, as a requisite for graduation, complete at a minimum one three-credit-hour course in either American History I or American History II, or the equivalent; and one three-credit-hour course in either American Literature I or American Literature II, or the equivalent.
2. American History I or an equivalent course shall include study of American culture from the colonial beginnings to approximately 1900. American History II or an equivalent course shall include study of American culture from approximately 1900 to the present. American Literature I or an equivalent course shall include study of major authors from the colonial authors to approximately 1860. American Literature II or an equivalent course shall include study of authors from approximately 1860 to the present.
