Summary of the Committee Version of the Bill

HB 625 -- PUBLIC SCHOOL RETIREMENT SYSTEM OF MISSOURI

SPONSOR: Dempsey

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Special Committee on
Retirement by a vote of 7 to 0.

This bill extends the election date of a certain retirement
option under the Public School Retirement System of Missouri from
July 1, 2008, to July 1, 2013.

FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2008, FY 2009, and
FY 2010.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill extends the 25-and-out
provision another five years. The provision has been extended
two other times. Many teachers will retire if the provision is
not extended; and there is already a severe shortage of teachers.

Testifying for the bill were Representative Dempsey; Public
School Retirement System of Missouri; Missouri State Teachers
Association; Missouri Council of School Administrators; and
Missouri National Education Association.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
