Summary of the Introduced Bill

HB 228 -- School Safety

Sponsor: Thomson

This bill adds all teachers at an attendance center to the list
of school employees who must be informed of acts of school
violence. A notice that a student has been found to have
committed an act of school violence will be required to be placed
on the student's academic transcript. By July 1, 2009, school
improvement program standards must include an annual drill and
require that staff receive sufficient training in crisis
management so that plan details remain familiar throughout the
year.

The grant award criteria for Safe Schools grants are revised to
give preference to districts that file joint applications, hold
regular meetings of education and social service and law
enforcement personnel, or use safe school techniques developed by
the Missouri Center for Safe Schools. A portion of grant awards
must be reserved for preventive plans.

The Missouri Children's Services Commission must develop
recommendations for best practices by July 1, 2008, in sharing
relevant state agency information on students receiving state
services while protecting the privacy of the students and
families involved.
