HB 1574 -- SHERIFFS' RETIREMENT SYSTEM SPONSOR: Jones (117) COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Special Committee on Retirement by a vote of 7 to 0. Currently, the beneficiary of an active member of the Sheriffs' Retirement System receives a death benefit of $10,000 or, if the member is killed in the performance of his or her duty, the beneficiary receives $20,000. This bill increases the death benefit of any active member who dies to $20,000. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2009, FY 2010, and FY 2011. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill increases the death benefit payable to a beneficiary of any member who dies to $20,000 and removes the burden of proof that the member was killed in the performance of duty in order to receive the increased benefit. Testifying for the bill were Representative Jones (117); Clarence Barnes, Sheriffs' Retirement System; and Jack Merritt, Greene County Sheriff's Office. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.Copyright (c) Missouri House of Representatives
