HB 1706 -- PUBLIC SCHOOL RETIREES SPONSOR: Baker (123) COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Special Committee on Student Achievement by a vote of 6 to 0. Currently, retired teachers of the Public School Retirement System of Missouri and retired employees of the Public Education Employee Retirement System of Missouri can work full time for up to two years for a school district having a critical shortage and continue to receive retirement benefits. This bill specifies that retirees can work part time or full time for two years in these districts without losing their retirement benefits. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2009, FY 2010, and FY 2011. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that one section of law allows a retiree to work up to 550 hours during any year in any district, while another section says a retiree can work full time for two years after retirement in certain districts. The bill is needed to clarify that a retiree can work between 550 hours and full time for up to two years in those districts. Testifying for the bill were Representative Baker (123); Missouri National Education Association; and Missouri State Teachers Association. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.Copyright (c) Missouri House of Representatives
